August updates - some highlight
We have made a lot of changes around here for the past 3 weeks. First of all, as you can see, we have a “Feedback us” tab floating in the down right corner. You can send us anything from ideas to improve MahShelf.com or some errors occurred while using the site. We always appreciate your opinions and will do our best to improve this service the way you want it to be.

Now to the good stuff…our Flash reader has been upgraded once more. It rocks! I won’t tell you everything we have done with it, as you can find them out yourself later. But here’s the best part: when you read to the end of a comic book, other related books will appear right inside the Flash reader. So now you don’t have to switch between Fullsceen mode and Normal mode whenever you finish reading a book.

Reading in Fullscreen mode is the best! And with this improvement, you will find it most convenient reading comics, manga and other graphic novels here at MahShelf.com.
Also, check out our Wiki page. You can access it by clicking the “Help” link on the top right corner of the site. This is where every usage of MahShelf.com will be listed and instructed. Your contribution in this page is mostly welcomed.

And to sum things up, we are very happy with this update. The future of reading comics online become a popular trend is within our sight. Thank you for your supports!

MahShelf outage on July 20, 2008
First we would like to say sorry for the inconvenience brought by the outage. Amazon, our storage provider, is having a service disruption that’s causing problems serving our comics and manga content.
As far as we know, Amazon storage has been very stable, we have not encountered any service downtime since the beginning of MahShelf and they offer an SLA for the S3 service, guaranteeing 99.9% uptime. You can keep track of their efforts over on their own Status Dashboard.
Meanwhile, we will release a newer version of MahShelf after the outage. Possibly we will fix some minor errors and improve some user interface experiences. Please bare with us and come back after a while, we know this is no fun, and we’re truly sorry of what happened.
How to embed flash reader in any forum and blog
Every book now has its own external reader that you can embed in any website to share with others. Usually, all you need to do is copying the code from the book page and paste it into your website.
Unfortunately, not every forum and blog allows HTML code due to some security issues. However, most of them support the convenient tag [flash][/flash]
[flash]http://somesites.com/flash.swf[/flash]
All you need is a simple hack with those tag by copying the book code
And append it to flash url like this
[flash]http://www.mahshelf.com/swf/external_player.swf?code=kEukYkEqk4[/flash]
There you go, enjoy sharing your books!
New features and Flash book reader
Another release is here! This time we have enabled a lot of new features and modifications for the Flash book reader. Things are getting better and better as we come up with new features each day to make reading online books, comics and magazines more fun and convenient.
You can now add other users as friends, put comments in their profiles and subscribe to others’ bookshelves to receive notification each time they upload a new book. You’ll have to watch your own account page for the notifications, though. Later you will be able to receive emails whenever your friends upload new books, so you can be sure that you won’t miss any interesting stuff.
Also, uploading books is a lot faster now, as you can save template of the book’s descriptions before pressing “Upload book” button to publish a book. This feature is super useful for anyone who wants to upload multiple books with the same description (most likely chapters from the same series).

Last but not least, did you notice that our Flash reader has changed a lot? Take a look at this screen-shot:

See the loading icon besides the full-screen button? It indicates that the other pages are being loaded so that after you finish with the current page, next pages are ready for you to read. After all pages of the book have been loaded, that icon will disappear. Neat, huh? Just wait, there will be more coming up next week; probably something you can embed into your own sites or blogs.
Summer is coming. Have fun people!

Update: Book options
Hello! You can now select the following options for your books before uploading them as well as modifying later in ‘My account’ page:
- Set as “private” : private books cannot be found by other users through any search result, related book suggestion or the Bookshelf (Profile) of the users who uploaded those contents. If you want to read a private book, you’ll have to know the link of it. If you have uploaded some books that you only want to share with certain people, set them as “private”.
- Set as “not suitable for everyone” : if you have uploaded some books that have certain amount of mature content or might offense someone (but are not really violating MahShelf terms of use)… set them as “not suitable for everyone”. When other users open these books, they will be notified with a warning message and required to Confirm that they really want to read the books regardless of the consequences.
- Disable commenting : Don’t want others commenting on your books? Chose this option.
- Disable rating : Don’t want others rating your books? Choose this option.
Some of you might have noticed the change of our ‘Flash reader’ recently. Indeed, we are testing the new reading application, which will make it most pleasant for you to read digital comics and books online. Summer is here! Have fun everybody

Server and features updates
Reading online books is fun, but it won’t be fun enough when there are some features missing. And we folks at MahShelf, who always enjoy reading books online, know that well. During the last week, we have improved our server performance and fixed some bugs. Also, the following upgrades have been made:
1. Better SEO for every book - Some SEO aspects of book pages have been improved to make uploaded books more appealing to search engines. Nevertheless, the more details your books’ descriptions and tags are, the better.
2. Link(s) in Book Description - Now you can post links in your books’ descriptions. This can help you link to relevant sites or give credits to other artists and authors. Don’t be lazy, share the links, share the love!
3. Only Featured Book - “Books” tab now shows only featured or most popular books. You will need to search if you want to find some specific contents.
Next week we’re adding even more features of MahShelf. Please continue to give us your feedbacks to improve the site’s performance.
Thanks.
Odin
PS: We are working on some final bits of the new Flash Book Reader, with new fancy look and new features that will rock your reading experience.

Public beta coming soon
Hi folks
Some of you asked us when this site will be launched to the public. Well, it will be, really soon…possibily next month.
Here at MahShelf, we are perfectionists. We don’t want to disappoint you and the others with a lot of bugs when start spreading the word out. There will be a lot of improvements when the open beta version is realeased. Until then, please enjoy your stay here.
Happy reading!
Odin
We’re launching!
Hi there !
Finally, we have finished the website for private beta testing (a bit late, but oh well…). A big welcome to everybody, especially friends and family. You guys have been our best supporters.
We hope that MahShelf can become a huge shelf of books where you can create, read and share all the books you want (comics, novels, magazines etc.) in a fun and simple way. By uploading image files (and in the future, document files), you can make a “Flash book” that everyone can read and discuss online. The best part is: no long-time-waiting for downloads. Each page is streamed one after another right after you open the book, and every uploaded image is compressed to reduce file size.
Though the website is quite empty for now, with just some basic features, we wanted to release early to get everyone’s opinion. We’re going to be adding new features each week, so enjoy yourself and have fun reading/ making books.
Please tell us how we can improve and what features you want to see in MahShelf. Send us a message at www.mahshelf.com/feedback
Thanks!
The MahShelf team
